Farmers from all across Northwest Missouri will have the opportunity to learn more about hemp at the Great Plains Grower Conference being held in St. Joseph January 9-11.
The Great Plains Grower Conference will have an informative session on Industrial Hemp. Field Specialist in Agronomy at the Buchanan County Extension Center, Wayne Flanary, says that there is a growing interest in selling, processing, and marketing the plant.
"Industrial hemp can take on a lot of different types of hemp. All these are considered, whether discussing the fiber itself, type of seed, of for the other purposes hemp is being grown."
Topics for the session include presenting field research done at K-State and the University of Nebraksa-Lincoln, special regulations for cultivation and processing hemp, and more information Integrated Pest Management in hemp.
"People want to know about wheat control, insect, what kind of diseases affect hemp. So again, this is a new crop so how do we manage this and what pests can we expect, that we need to watch for."
A fee is included to attend today's Great Plains Grower Conference.
The Great Plains Grower Conference starts today at the Fulkerson Center on the Missouri Western campus in St. Joseph.
